Glazed Coffered Ceiling, Aged Plaster Walls and Crackle Finishes
Layers of glaze were brushed on the recessed areas of the coffered ceiling. Aged plaster finish was applied on the outer areas of the ceiling and on all of the walls. The stairway risers, spindles and wainscoting were aged with a crackle technique and washed with an umber glaze. *photos by Bear Stapely
Color Washed Stone Fireplace
A new homeowner asked me if I could do anything to lighten the stone of the fireplace. It was very costly to remove and replace so they wanted a solution to keep it and have it feel cohesive with the lighter colors.
I figured, what’s the worst that could happen? It’s just paint. Paint it out solid if my transparent wash approach fails. So I began experimenting with a transparent white wash to maintain the look of stone but bring it a few shades lighter. In the end, I used a variety of 4 colors of washes so that it had character of natural stone and not a monotone white wash.
It worked out perfectly. The stone looks natural! I also stained the mantel darker to match a built-in cabinet that lives in the same room.
Blue Ombre Hand-Painted Wall Glaze
The subtle transition of deep blue to soft cream surrounds this room with tranquility. I worked with SuzAnn Kletzien Design to imagine and achieve this unique hand painted effect. *photos by Two Birds Photography
Sheen on Sheen Stripes
Sheen on sheen stripes created by using the same color of paint but in two different sheens - eggshell and pearl sheen - to give a subtle stripe design. I also chose an accent color for the ceiling.
Multi Sheen and Tone Stripes
A monochromatic color scheme made more interesting by the use of stripes of different sizes, tones of blue and a combination of glossy, eggshell and flat sheens. The effect is soft and sophisticated.
The ceiling and walls were painted the same base color of blue for a cohesive feel. It creates a cozy atmosphere and draws attention to the special wall treatment.
Custom Glazed Cabinet
Custom cabinet before paint.
After consulting on the design of the custom storage cabinet, I layered an umber glaze over a dove gray base color. The glaze accents the crevices of the bead board lining the back of the unit and the recessed areas of the doors and detail trim. To finish the look, the area behind the television was painted a deep brown to help it recede and be at ‘home’ in the large cabinet.
